N'Gomby Compound School

Zambia's capital City  Lusaka (pop.3.4mil.)  has many large compounds,  one named "N'Gomby", it's estimated 120,000 live there, in the center of this slum is "Needs Care Day Center", where a wonderful couple Geoff and Esther run a  school, where over 200 orphans receive a free education to grade seven. They also visit and assist the sick, disabled and elderly carers of the orphans.

Inspired by Geoffry and Esther, we have a dream for our own school in a rural setting near Mazabuka with a holistic approach focusing on academic, spiritual, practical skills, music, cultural arts and crafts, health and environmental studies. A school that will act as the nucleus for growth of a  community. See (School and vocational training center) in future projects.

When possible, we assist the N'gomby school with food and other materials. This can be expanded as we progress. When donated, the kids are fed as they are from very impoverished homes and mostly malnourished. On one occasion Trudy assisted with cooking the lunch with the other volunteers.  Cooking was done over a coal fire in old car rims, alongside the old mostly roofless building, the children ate  corn-meal (shema) with cabbage, greens, tomatoes and onion relish, with small dried fish cooked in oil.  Being a Christian school all the children waited until all had their meal before thanking the Lord.

On the day we helped cook, it was a hot summers day and we were a bit puzzled why a lot of the children had jumpers on, after asking we were told that the jumpers were donated the previous winter and it was the only part of a school uniform they owned, they were so proud to go to a school they wore them in summer as well.
